Saint Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, is a prominent figure in the New Testament. She was the wife of the priest Zechariah and was childless for many years until the angel Gabriel announced to her the birth of a son, John, who would prepare the way for Christ. Elizabeth was also a relative of the Virgin Mary, and their encounter during their pregnancies is known as the “Magnificat,” in which the child in her womb joyfully responded to the presence of Jesus.
Elizabeth is venerated as the patron saint of pregnant women and mothers, especially those who have difficulty conceiving. Many Orthodox women pray to her for protection during pregnancy and for healthy children. Her trust in God’s plan and her acceptance of her late motherhood make her a model of faith for women.
Her feast day is celebrated on September 5th (Julian calendar), September 18th (Gregorian calendar), when Orthodox believers honor her role in the history of salvation and remember the miracle of John the Baptist’s birth. Her story is a powerful symbol of patience, faith, and God’s providence.
