Saint Matthew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, is venerated as the author of the first Gospel in the New Testament. Before his calling by Jesus, Matthew was a tax collector, a profession often despised in Jewish society. However, Jesus invited him to follow, symbolizing Matthew’s conversion and dedication to spreading the Gospel. Matthew’s Gospel is a cornerstone of Christian doctrine, detailing the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

Matthew is the patron saint of tax collectors, accountants, and bankers. His story represents conversion and forgiveness, and many pray to him for the healing of sins and a renewed life in faith. He is also frequently invoked for intercession in professional challenges, particularly those involving financial matters.

His feast day, celebrated on November 16 (Julian calendar: November 29 Gregorian calendar), is observed in many Orthodox churches with readings from the Gospel of Matthew. He is regarded as a symbol of divine grace and forgiveness, and his story continues to inspire believers to repentance and renewal in their faith.
