Greek icon | Saint Great Martyr George the Victorious depicted as a Soldier on horse.
A menacing dragon held a city captive under the threat of destruction from its toxic breath unless it received human sacrifices. The selection of these unfortunate individuals was dictated by the roll of a lottery, which one day fatefully landed on the king’s daughter. The girl was subsequently taken to the lake that was the dragon’s abode.
However, before the dragon could extinguish her life, a knight named Georg hailing from Cappadocia intervened. He brandished his lance, marked with the sign of the cross, and drove it through the dragon. Georg then instructed the princess to lead the wounded beast through the city streets using her belt.
This terrifying spectacle incited panic among the citizens, who were ready to abandon their homes. Georg offered them salvation – he pledged to slay the dragon on the condition they would embrace Christianity. Saint Georg then fulfilled his promise, vanquishing the dragon, and leading to the conversion and baptism of all the city’s inhabitants, including the king himself.
This story unfolds against the backdrop of a shimmering gold canvas.
