Description
Highly rare Orthodox icon | Christ Pantocrator with Silver Oklad.
Christ Pantocrator is the quintessential icon, representing the “Almighty” or “All-Powerful.” Through His incarnation, Christ embodies the ineffable mysteries and serves as the image of the unseen God. The Council of Nicea in 325 AD affirmed His role as the visible and perfect image of the Father.
The Pantocrator’s image symbolizes resistance to iconoclasm in the Byzantine Church, defended by figures like John of Damascus. A similar motif, the Majestas Domini (“Glory of the Lord”), exists in the Western Church, depicting secular rulers.
In this icon, Christ actively blesses, holding the open Gospel and declaring: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest…” (Matthew 11:28).
The Silver Oklad, meticulously handcrafted, is of exceptional quality. It bears the hallmark of 84 Silver from Ivan Sergeyevich Lebedkin (1898-1914), associated with the 1st. Moscow Artel.
