Description

Orthodox icon | Mother of God “Joy of All Oppressed” | 24790.

Crafted from bronze, brass, and other yellow metals, and enhanced with dual-tone enamel, this icon vividly depicts the Mother of God on her own, without the child. Angels lead individuals plagued with various ailments and sorrows towards her. People celebrate this icon on October 24.

The Mother of God icon rose to prominence in the late 17th century. Evfimija, Patriarch Joachim of Moscow’s sister, battled a prolonged severe illness.

During a prayer session, she heard a voice which said, “Evfimija! Amid your suffering, why not seek solace in the One who heals all? In the Church of the Transfiguration of my Son, you’ll find my image, known as ‘The Joy of All Sorrowful’.

Have a priest bring you this image, and once he performs a supplication service with water consecration, you will heal.”

Following this divine instruction, Evfimija regained her health.

Christ crowns the icon, bestowing a blessing.
