Description
Orthodox icon | Mother of God “Joy of All Oppressed” | Bronze | 24847.
Made of bronze, brass, or another yellow-toned metal, this icon showcases the majestic Mother of God. She stands alone, without the child. Around her, people suffer from various ailments.
Angels lead these individuals to her. The icon is especially significant on October 24, celebrated in its honor.
This icon originated in the late 17th century, linked to a story of healing and divine help. Evfimija, Patriarch Joachim of Moscow’s sister, suffered from a severe illness.
During deep prayer, a divine voice guided her to relief. It told her to seek healing from the image of “The Joy of All Sorrowful” in the Church of the Transfiguration of the Son. She was to ask a priest to display the image and hold a prayer service with sanctified water. This act, the voice promised, would heal her. Following this advice, Evfimija turned to the icon and recovered.
Above this scene, more divine figures appear. Christ acts as the high priest, flanked by archangels Michael and Gabriel, and cherubim, enhancing the icon’s spiritual symbolism.
This icon is featured and discussed in “Metalen Ikonen – Blauwdruk van een verzameling,” a book authored by Jos Opdebeeck, and published by Campinia Media vzw in 1997. The book, bearing the ISBN number 90.356.1088, delves into this icon on page 77.
