Orthodox icon | Mother of God of the Burning Bush | 24779.

The “Unburnt Bush” depiction stands as a profound emblem of the Virgin Mother of God. Miraculously, even when surrounded by divine flames, she remains untouched and unharmed. This intricate and symbolic portrayal of Mary, steeped in deep reverence, has its origins in Russia from the 16th century onwards.

Furthermore, at the heart of this representation is the Mother of God cradling Emmanuel. They are encapsulated within an eight-pointed star, formed by overlaying two diamonds. This star rests upon a rosette, a symbol of Mary’s purity and her divine essence.

Notably, the Mother of God is also portrayed holding the Ladder of Jacob. This ladder serves as a symbolic bridge between Heaven and Earth. Accompanying this central imagery are eight angels, representing divine intervention and heavenly messages.

Beyond its rich religious symbolism, the Unburnt Bush icon holds a special place in cultural folklore. It’s reputed to shield against lightning and fire. As a result, many believers place this emblem in their homes or apartments, seeking its protective aura. The icon, therefore, not only offers spiritual guidance but also acts as a divine barrier against natural calamities, ensuring safety within the sanctity of one’s home.
