Craftsmen skillfully fashioned this classical icon from materials like bronze, brass, or other similar yellow-toned metals. The icon vividly presents the Mother of God pointing to her incarnate Son. Authoritatively seated, He blesses onlookers and holds a scroll.

In 1383, this iconic representation of the Mother of God emerged on a cloud above Lake Ladoga. While tending to their nets, fishermen spotted an unusual glow. They witnessed an icon hovering over the water, with angels guiding its path. This divine image journeyed to various locations before finally anchoring near the Tikhvinka River, by Tikhvin.

In honor of this divine event, people built a church at this site. It’s dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. Interestingly, fire destroyed the church three times, but the icon inside always remained untouched. Today, people across Russia deeply revere this icon. Those praying for children’s health and healing often seek its divine help.

The icon has a special feast day on June 26.

For those who wish to explore this iconic piece further, it is featured in Jos Opdebeeck’s book titled “Metalen Ikonen – Blauwdruk van een verzameling,” published by Campinia Media vzw in 1997. Detailed insights on the icon can be found on page 58 of the book, with the ISBN: 90.356.1088.
