The depiction:

This iconic representation belongs to the classical tradition of the Mother-of-God icons. The figure of the Mother of God directs her gentle gaze towards the incarnate Son of God. He sits enthroned in a regal posture, radiating divine grace and wisdom. With a gesture of blessing, he holds a sacred scroll in his hand, symbolizing the divine teachings and wisdom that he imparts to humanity.

The Legend:

The revered icon’s origin dates back to 1383 when it miraculously appeared suspended above Lake Ladoga. The fishermen, casting their nets, witnessed a radiant cloud and were amazed by its luminosity. They saw the icon gracefully floating in the air above the water. Carried by celestial beings, it appeared in different places before settling near the Tichvinka River close to Tichvin.

In honor of this divine manifestation, faithful believers erected a magnificent church on the sacred site. Regrettably, fires ravaged the church on three separate occasions, reducing it to ruins. Remarkably, the miraculous icon housed within remained unharmed, showcasing its divine protection. This event and the icon’s preservation have solidified its esteemed status in Russia.

Therefore, the venerated Mother-of-God icon holds a special place in the hearts of believers, who seek her intercession for the well-being and healing of children. They earnestly pray for her maternal care and divine intervention. Her presence brings solace and hope to those who trust in her compassionate intercession.

The feast day dedicated to this sacred icon is celebrated on June 26th. On this day, believers gather in prayerful devotion, expressing gratitude for received blessings and seeking continued guidance and protection under the watchful gaze of the Mother of God.
