Description
Orthodox icon | Mother of God of Tikhvin | 24763.
The Mother of God of Tikhvin (Tikhvinskaya) is a classic representation of the Mother of God. She gestures towards her Son, the incarnation of God, while Jesus Christ, seated on His divine throne, presents a regal figure, bestowing blessings and holding a scroll in His hand.
The appearance of this icon dates back to 1383 when it mysteriously hovered on a cloud over Lake Ladoga. Fishermen at the lake witnessed a radiant light and saw the icon floating above the water’s surface.
Conveyed by angels, the icon appeared at several locations before descending near the city of Tikhvin, along the Tikhvinka River.
A church dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God was erected at this site, commemorating the miraculous event. Despite being engulfed in flames three times, the church was razed each time, yet the icon miraculously remained unscathed.
The Russian people hold this icon dear, frequently praying before it, especially for the well-being and healing of children.
The Feast of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God is celebrated on June 26th annually, serving as a testament to the divine power of the Mother of God and the miracles associated with her representation.
Beautiful icon and in very good condition for an icon from the 18th century.
