Description
This individual, born in the 4th century, resided in the Byzantine Empire until the time of his demise. Under the reign of Julian the Apostate, he was coerced into fighting against Christianity. His acts of compassion towards those in need and his defense of Christians led to his imprisonment and a pending death sentence. However, following the Emperor’s death in battle, he was set free.
Traditionally, he is portrayed with dark hair and a beard, donned in a cloak. His image is often associated with three emblematic symbols: a cross, a spear, and a shield.
While the precise date of his death remains uncertain, it’s well-established that he lived to a ripe old age. As per legend, he specified the location for his burial, and a devout woman subsequently made an appearance. His relics were safeguarded in a Constantinople church dedicated to John the Apostle, where they’re said to perform miracles. The faithful often seek the Saint’s intercession and comfort in times of loss and bereavement.
His commemoration is observed on July 30th.
The piece’s background features poliment gilding and is decorated with engraved, punched, and painted ornaments.
