Orthodox icon | Saint Nicholas of Myra | 24824.

In this orthodox icon, Saint Nicholas of Myra is vividly depicted adorned in the regal attire of a bishop, donning his liturgical robes. Holding an esteemed position, resting in his arm is the open Gospel, which showcases his daily pericope from Luke 6:17-23.

To his sides, Christ, graciously extending the Gospel towards him, and the revered Mother of God, delicately presenting him with the Omophorion, further emphasize his prominence. This symbol represents his ecclesiastical authority.

Furthermore, the depiction of Saint Nicholas is remarkably detailed. The intricate gold painting on his robes, for instance, symbolizes his elevated spiritual rank. Consequently, this artistic portrayal doesn’t just showcase his rank but also captures the very essence of his revered persona, paying tribute to the virtues he exemplified throughout his life.

About Saint Nicholas:

Born in 283 in Patara, Turkey, Saint Nicholas died in 348 in Myra, now Demre. Both the Eastern and Latin Churches highly revere him, making him a notable saint.

His feast days on December 6th, May 9th, and July 29th are rich in customs.

In the early fourth century, he was the Bishop of Myra in Lycia, Asia Minor. This area, once Roman and then Byzantine, is now part of Turkey. His Greek name, Nikólaos, means “victory of the people” and has pre-Christian origins.

Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of many, including Russia, children, expectant mothers, travelers, lawyers, and more.

Today, many worldwide, especially in the orthodox community, venerate him, remembering his impact and legacy.
