Absolute Sensation!
Just in time for the upcoming Easter festivities, we’re sharing something truly special: For the first time in our nearly 70-year history, we had a remarkable icon scientifically researched and restored – an Italo-Cretan Anastasis icon from the 17th–18th century (the wooden panel dates back to the 13th century).
The Anastasis – the Descent into Hell – is the central image of the Orthodox Easter: Christ breaking the gates of Hades and raising Adam and Eve from the dead.Originally part of the Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia, this icon was exported in 1834.
Learn more in the fascinating thesis by Eva-Maria Ortner (University of Applied Arts, Vienna): “Restoration between Conservation Demands and Orthodox Religious Practice. An Italo-Cretan Anastasis Icon”.
The icon is currently not for sale but can be viewed in our gallery.
